Emmersons' senior partner Jacqueline Emmerson is head of the family department and is a member of the Law Society's Specialist Family Law Panel and Resolution.
She is one of a limited number of solicitors in the area who deals with Collaborative Family Law. She specialises in high net worth cases often including business assets.
Divorce is a very difficult process to deal with for a number of reasons, not least the fact that your marriage has broken down. You not only have to deal with the emotional side of the breakdown, but the financial side needs to be considered too, especially if there are children involved as you will have to come to an agreement about who will look after them, and how to split financial responsibility too.
At Emmersons Solicitors with offices in Newcastle and Sunderland, we understand how stressful it is to deal with the thought of getting a divorce or dissolution and also having to consider sorting out maintenance payments for you and your children. We can help you to work with your ex-partner to come to an amicable and financially suitable arrangement for you both.
What is Maintenance?
Maintenance can be an amount that is paid to a parent who primarily cares for the children following the breakdown of the marriage. If you are caring for the children and are therefore unable to work full time, you may be financially worse off so maintenance payments will go towards helping to balance that loss.
It can also be paid for your benefit even if you do not have children. You may not be able to work for health reasons or because you have been unable to find work. The amount paid in maintenance will vary depending upon the personal circumstances of both parties. If you are receiving maintenance from your ex-spouse and meet a new partner and move in together your maintenance payments may reduce as a result.
If you are paying maintenance and lose your job then you should consider reducing the maintenance that you pay.
