Emmersons Solicitors has become the first solicitors in the country to sign up to a specialist incentive for people with visible and invisible disabilities.
We are now an official ambassador for Slow Shopping, an organisation which campaigns for comfortable environments for people with communication or literacy difficulties, older people or those with anxiety.
The firm’s Gosforth office will now run a dedicated drop-in session every Tuesday for those who require legal advice in a relaxed setting. Staff and team members are also trained and on hand to support any specific needs.
Jacqueline Emmerson, director at Emmersons Solicitors, said: “Shopping is something which many of us take for granted; however, for many people, it is a challenging experience. The Slow Shopping initiative really stood out to us as it allows everyone the opportunity to maintain a level of independence.
“Slow Shopping originated in Gosforth when Katherine Vero approached Sainsbury's to see if they would designate a short period in the week for those with early-stage dementia and their carers so that they could do their shopping in a relaxed environment. This was a huge success. There were more staff available, chairs and toilet facilities and any loud music and tannoys were switched off.
“At Emmersons Solicitors, we have undergone training so that our staff can assist anyone with visible or invisible disabilities. During our sessions, those requiring assistance, their careers and families can drop into our Gosforth office for free legal advice.”
“We strongly believe that it is incredibly important for local businesses to support our communities. One of our main priorities is to ensure that local people are supported, and opportunities to maintain a healthy and happy lifestyle are available.”
Members of the firm’s team have already become official Dementia Friends, an initiative set up by Alzheimer’s Society. The law practice also plays an integral part in the Gosforth Dementia Friendly Group, joining forces with other local businesses and charities in sharing their knowledge and experiences of supporting clients and loved ones living with diseases which cause dementia.
The group, which meets once a month, has been instrumental in introducing dementia friendly cafes and other retail initiatives, encouraging people with dementia to go shopping in a comfortable environment.
